PIONEER Partner Universities Meet in Huelva to Advance the Future of Mobility Across the Alliance

More than 30 mobility professionals, internationalisation experts and Vice-Rectors from the ten PIONEER partner universities gathered in Huelva to advance the development of the PIONEER Mobility and Internationalisation Plan (PMIP), a key strategic roadmap that will shape mobility and internationalisation activities across the Alliance in the coming years.

From 5 to 7 May 2026, the University of Huelva hosted the PIONEER Mobility Workshop, a three-day working meeting that marked a significant milestone in the development of the PIONEER Mobility and Internationalisation Plan (PMIP).

The workshop resulted in substantial progress towards the completion of the Plan, including the collaborative drafting and validation of a series of strategic actions that will guide mobility and internationalisation across the Alliance between 2026 and 2028. By the end of the meeting, partners had further consolidated a shared roadmap aimed at making mobility more accessible, inclusive, impactful and better integrated across the ten PIONEER universities.

As one of the PIONEER Alliance’s key strategic deliverables, the PMIP will provide a common framework for mobility and internationalisation activities, supporting the development of a more connected European Higher Education ecosystem and strengthening cooperation among partner institutions.

“The PMIP is much more than a mobility plan. It is a shared commitment to building a truly European university experience, where students and staff can access meaningful international opportunities regardless of their background or starting point,” said Blanca Miedes, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Global Engagement at the University of Huelva and local coordinator of the workshop.

To achieve this, participants worked through a series of thematic breakout sessions aligned with the PMIP’s Key Actions. Mobility professionals, internationalisation experts and institutional leaders were organised into collaborative working groups focused on different dimensions of the mobility experience.

Over the course of the workshop, discussions addressed topics including mobility incentives, welcome services, local language courses, mobility information systems, academic offer visibility, Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), visiting professors, staff exchange schemes, international weeks, virtual mobility, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), internationalisation at home, internships, volunteering opportunities and cross-cultural competence development.

Each Key Action was coordinated by one or more partner universities with recognised expertise in the respective area. This distributed leadership model encouraged peer learning, the exchange of good practices and the co-creation of solutions that reflect the diversity and strengths of the Alliance.

The work was structured around four strategic priorities that underpin the PMIP:

  • Making international mobility accessible to all
  • Harmonising mobility management across partner universities
  • Strengthening internationalisation at home through virtual and collaborative learning opportunities
  • Enhancing the real-world impact of mobility through internships, volunteering and stakeholder engagement

“The strength of the PMIP lies in its collaborative nature. By bringing together mobility practitioners, internationalisation experts and institutional leaders from across the Alliance, we were able to transform shared ambitions into concrete actions and a common roadmap for implementation,” said Juan Ramón Real, Coordinator of the PIONEER Technical Office at the University of Huelva.

The final day focused on reviewing progress across all working groups, discussing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and exploring how the PMIP can be embedded within the internationalisation strategies of each partner institution.

The outcomes of the workshop represented an important step towards the finalisation of the PIONEER Mobility and Internationalisation Plan.

Participants in the PIONEER Mobility Workshop, hosted by the University of Huelva from 5–7 May 2026, gathered at the Faculty of Humanities. The workshop brought together more than 30 mobility professionals, internationalisation experts and Vice-Rectors from the ten partner universities of the PIONEER Alliance: Université Gustave Eiffel (France), Avans University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal), Laurea University of Applied Sciences (Finland), TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences (Germany), the University of Huelva (Spain), Università Iuav di Venezia (Italy), Tomas Bata University in Zlín (Czechia), the University of Žilina (Slovakia) and Bern University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland), to advance the development of the PIONEER Mobility and Internationalisation Plan (PMIP).
