PIONEER Students Contribute to European Policy Debate at the European Parliament

Students representing the PIONEER Alliance took part in the European Student Assembly 2026, held at the European Parliament from 20 to 22 April 2026. Bringing together more than 240 students from European Universities alliances across the continent, the Assembly created a space for student-led debate on some of Europe’s most pressing challenges and future priorities.

Among the participants was Daniel Chovanec from the University of Žilina and member of the PIONEER Council, who contributed to Panel 8 focused on Europe’s strategic autonomy. Over several months of preparation, participants explored how the European Union can strengthen its resilience and independence in key areas such as critical raw materials, energy, food security and digital infrastructure, while remaining committed to democratic values, human rights and fair international cooperation.

The panel’s recommendations were presented, debated and voted on during the Assembly sessions in Strasbourg, where students worked together to formulate proposals addressed to European policymakers and institutions.

Joining Daniel at ESA 2026 was Inês Figueira from Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Together, they represented the PIONEER Alliance in discussions focused on the future of Europe, higher education and civic participation, while exchanging perspectives with students from alliances across Europe.

“Participating in ESA 2026 was an opportunity to experience how student voices can contribute to European discussions that shape our common future. It also showed the importance of cooperation between students from different countries and academic backgrounds,” said Daniel Chovanec.

The European Student Assembly is one of the flagship initiatives supporting student engagement within the European Universities Initiative. The recommendations adopted during the Assembly are shared with Members of the European Parliament, EU institutions and other stakeholders as contributions to ongoing European policy discussions.

The participation of Daniel and Inês reflects PIONEER Alliance’s commitment to empowering students as active contributors to European cooperation, democratic participation and the future development of higher education in Europe.
